Four things decide it. The movement:look for hand-winding and hacking (the seconds hand stops when you set it) — Seiko’s 4R36 and Orient’s in-house calibers both have them; the older 7S26 is bulletproof but has neither. Size:automatics can wear large, so check the case diameter against the recipient’s wrist (our size guide has a table). Water resistance:100m or more if they’ll wear it daily. And wear frequency:an automatic stops after a day or two off the wrist, so it suits someone who’ll actually put it on.
