NATO vs Leather vs Metal: Which Strap?

A NATO (fabric) strap is casual, tough and cheap; leather is dressy and classic but not for water; a metal bracelet is the most versatile and durable but the heaviest.The strap changes a watch’s whole character, and the good news is that most straps can be swapped in minutes — so even if a gift comes on the “wrong” one, it’s an easy, inexpensive fix.

The three strap types

  • NATO / fabric:A one-piece woven nylon strap that’s casual, comfortable, water-friendly and very durable. It comes in endless colors, costs little, and is the easiest to swap — ideal for a younger recipient or a sporty, relaxed look.
  • Leather:The classic dress option — warm, smart and timeless. It dresses a watch up beautifully but doesn’t love water or heavy sweat, and it wears out over years (though replacements are cheap).
  • Metal bracelet:The most versatile and hard-wearing choice, equally at home at the office or the weekend. It’s heavier and usually needs sizing (removing links) to fit — a quick job at a jeweler.

Which to choose for a gift

Match the strap to the recipient’s style and life. Dressy or professional? Leather or a bracelet. Active, young, or casual? A NATO is hard to beat. Want maximum flexibility? Can you put any strap on any watch?

Usually, as long as you match the lug width (the gap between the lugs, in millimeters) — common sizes are 18mm, 20mm and 22mm. Standard spring bars let you swap straps in minutes with a cheap tool. A few watches with integrated or proprietary straps are exceptions, so check before buying a replacement.

Are NATO straps good quality?
